What is the Aldo Leopold Festival?

Les Cheneaux welcomes you to celebrate the legacy of Aldo Leopold — one of America’s most influential naturalists — during our festival, May 29th – June 2nd, 2024. Activities include paddling excursions, orchid and wildflower tours, birding trips, presentations, and many other nature-based activities. Experience the woods and water that formed Leopold’s early impressions of the natural world as we honor the mark he made on conservation and the environment.

Registration is now open. View the full Event Schedule

About our Festival Posters

Local illustrator Katie Elberts has designed the annual poster for the Aldo Leopold Festival for the past 9 years. The 2024 poster features many of the foraged plants that are available in Michigan including: wild asparagus, plantain, wild violets, thistle, wild lettuce, morel mushrooms, golden chanterelle, yarrow, dandelion, red clover, cedar, trout lily leaf, and oyster mushrooms.
Festival posters will be available for sale at the Hessel School House while supplies last beginning in May. A limited supply of past festival posters are also available.

Help us capture the Aldo Leopold Festival experience and you could win a prize! Winners will be randomly selected from all entries, one for each photo category. To participate, scan the QR code at the festival desk with the camera on your smartphone and follow the prompts.

Photos must be taken during the 2024 festival dates.

Join us for a delightful evening of connecting with fellow festival attendees while you savor a picnic dinner on the Hessel School House lawn (or indoors if inclement weather). Indulge in your choice of mouthwatering BBQ Chicken or Vegetable Lasagna, complete with all the delectable sides. Meal is catered by Audie’s Restaurant of Mackinaw City. Ticket sales close May 15. We will have a very limited amount of tickets for sale at the festival. Purchase them during check-in or call 906-484-1333. Must have a festival pass to attend the dinner.

Unleash your creativity during our nature-inspired arts and crafts time! Join us on the lawn as we paint sticks, craft bird feeders, and indulge in more exciting nature-themed activities. This event is perfect for the young and the young at heart. Admission is by donation, so come join us for a fun-filled day of artistic exploration amidst the serene backdrop of nature.

Open to public. A festival pass is not required to attend this event.
